What are Trigger Points?
The term ‘trigger point’ was appointed because when pressure is applied to a particular point during palpation, a pain signal triggers muscle spasms in the surrounding tissue. Trigger points are commonly referred to as knots!
What causes trigger points?
· Muscular tension or overuse
· High intensity training
· Nervous system overexertion
· Poor circulation
· Compensatory movement patterns
· Acute or chronic injury
Where do trigger points commonly occur?
How can trigger points be treated?
Trigger points can be released fairly easily. Effleurage massage will warm the tissue prior to deeper massage techniques such as compression to relieve the tension. Stretching can also help to relieve the trigger points.
